RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disorder that primarily affects the joints, causing inflammation, pain, swelling, stiffness, and loss of function. Unlike osteoarthritis, which results from wear and tear on the joints over time, rheumatoid arthritis occurs when the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks its own tissues, specifically the synovium, the lining of the joints.
RA can affect any joint in the body but most commonly affects the small joints of the hands, wrists, and feet. In addition to joint symptoms, rheumatoid arthritis can also cause systemic symptoms such as fatigue, fever, and weight loss.
The exact cause of rheumatoid arthritis is unknown, but it is believed to involve a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Certain risk factors, such as family history, smoking, and obesity, may increase the likelihood of developing RA.
Treatment for rheumatoid arthritis aims to reduce inflammation, alleviate symptoms, slow the progression of joint damage, and improve overall quality of life. This may involve a combination of medications, including nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), biologic agents, and corticosteroids. In addition to medication, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and lifestyle modifications such as exercise and stress management can also play a role in managing RA symptoms and improving joint function.
While there is currently no cure for rheumatoid arthritis, early diagnosis and aggressive treatment can help control symptoms and prevent long-term joint damage. Regular monitoring by a rheumatologist is essential for managing RA and adjusting treatment as needed to maintain disease control and minimize complications.
